Assignment Rules Reference

Assignment rules connect charts to products. This page is the full reference — for a first-time walkthrough see Assign charts to products.

A rule has three parts:

  1. Chart — what gets assigned.
  2. Match mode — whether ALL conditions or ANY condition must match.
  3. Conditions — a flat list of field + operator + value (one level, no nested groups).
FieldBest forNotes
CollectionDepartment-level charts (“Tops”, “Footwear”)Handles are matched
TagAd-hoc groups (“hoodie”, “sale”)Case-insensitive
VendorBrand-specific sizingExact vendor name
Product typeCategory sizing (“T-shirt”)Case-insensitive
TitleCatching specific itemsUse contains / starts with
SKUExact itemsWorks with is / contains / starts with
MetafieldCustom attributesAny product metafield value
OperatorBehaviour
isExact match (case-insensitive)
is notMatches everything except the value
containsThe value appears within the field
starts withThe field begins with the value
  • ALL conditions — every condition must hold. Example: collection is Tops and tag is not accessory — this can’t be expressed as two separate rules (a product matching either one alone would still get a chart).
  • ANY condition — one match is enough. Example: tag is hoodie or tag is sweatshirt — replaces two identical rules.

Rules apply top to bottom; the first matching rule wins. Reorder with Move up / Move down.

A typical setup keeps specific rules on top:

1. Leather jackets (collection is leather-jackets) → chart "Leather"
2. Hoodies (tag is hoodie) → chart "Hoodies"
3. All tops (collection is tops) → chart "Tops (default)"

The distinction decides how a rule is applied:

  • Simple rule — exactly one condition, field is collection/tag/vendor/product type, operator is. Marked “No product writes needed”: it’s resolved from a shop-level map at page-render time. Nothing is written to products, and the rule’s effect is instant.
  • Complex rule — anything else (multiple conditions, ANY mode, is not/contains/starts with, title/SKU/metafield fields). On publish, the app resolves matching products in the background and writes the chart reference to each product; a progress indicator tracks the run, which retries automatically if interrupted.

Preview matches shows what a publish would do — the first matching products with Product / Matched by / Chart now / Chart after columns, a total of how many products will change, and an overwrite warning when products already carrying a different chart will be switched. Previewing writes nothing.

A pinned chart always beats every rule for that product. Use it for one-off items (e.g. a product with unique sizing that shares a collection with others). Removing the pin returns the product to rule-based assignment.

EventWhat happens
You publish a ruleSimple rules: instant. Complex rules: background job writes matching products, with progress
You edit a product or collectionThe app re-checks that product/collection’s assignments in the background automatically
You publish a new themeNothing changes for assignment — but re-add the app block on the new theme (see below)
You delete a chartCharts already on products keep showing until removed; the widget disappears after the next sync

The product count per chart (in Charts and on Home) is a snapshot from the last publish, not a live figure.
