Create and Edit a Label Template
This guide shows you how to create a label template from scratch — or edit one of the pre-installed starter templates — using the visual editor and its live WYSIWYG preview.
For what each option means (fields, presets, barcode formats), see the Label template overview.
Step 1: Open the template editor
Section titled “Step 1: Open the template editor”- In the app, go to Label templates.
- Click New template to create one, or click the Edit (pencil) icon on an existing row to modify it.
The editor opens as a large dialog with the settings at the top, the slot list in the middle, and a live preview of your label at the bottom.
Step 2: Name the template and choose the paper
Section titled “Step 2: Name the template and choose the paper”- Enter a Template name (e.g. “Shelf labels — Avery 5160”).
- In Sheet preset, pick the paper you’ll print on — e.g. Avery 5160/8160 — Address (Letter, 30 up) for the classic 30-up address sheet, or your Dymo/Zebra roll size.
- Optionally tick Default template to pre-select this template for new print jobs.
Using a sheet that isn’t in the list (Custom sheet)
Section titled “Using a sheet that isn’t in the list (Custom sheet)”If your printer paper isn’t among the presets, choose Custom sheet… at the bottom of the Sheet preset list. A dimensions form appears — enter the geometry your label supplier or printer specifies:
| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Name | A name for the sheet (used in the template list) |
| Sheet width / height (mm) | The full page size — 215.9 × 279.4 mm for US Letter, 210 × 297 mm for A4 |
| Columns / Rows per sheet | How many labels fit across and down one sheet |
| Label width / height (mm) | The size of one printable cell |
| Horizontal / Vertical pitch (mm) | Distance between the start of one label and the next — label size plus the gap between labels |
| Left margin / Top margin (mm) | Where the first label starts, from the page edge |
The form validates as you type — if the geometry can’t produce a valid layout (labels overlapping, margins outside the page), you’ll see the error before saving.
Step 3: Set the barcode options
Section titled “Step 3: Set the barcode options”- Barcode format: keep auto unless you need to force a specific symbology. Auto picks EAN-13/UPC-A/EAN-8 for digit-only barcodes and Code 128 for everything else.
- Barcode height (mm): 10 mm scans reliably on office printers; use 6 mm on very short labels (Avery 5167) and 40–50 mm on large shipping labels.
Step 4: Add slots (label content)
Section titled “Step 4: Add slots (label content)”Slots render top to bottom — exactly the order you see in the editor.
- Click Add slot.
- In the new row, choose a Field — e.g. Product title.
- Set its Size, Align, and Bold.
- Repeat for each line. A few recipes:
| Goal | Slots |
|---|---|
| Price label | Combined line (title / price / sku, S) → Barcode digits (S) → Barcode |
| Minimal SKU label | SKU (M, bold) → Barcode (6 mm height) |
| Big warehouse label | Product title (XL) → Variant title (L) → Barcode (50 mm) → SKU (L) |
Slot-specific controls:
- Barcode field: size/align/bold don’t apply (the symbol fills the width) — its height comes from Barcode height at the top.
- Custom text: a text input appears for your fixed wording.
- Combined line (multiple fields): click the field chips to include them, reorder the active chips with ← →, and set the Separator between parts (default
" / ").
Step 5: Reorder and remove slots
Section titled “Step 5: Reorder and remove slots”- Use the ↑ / ↓ buttons (or drag the grip) to move a slot up or down.
- Click ✕ to remove a slot.
The live preview under the slot list updates as you edit, using sample data (a sample product, SKU, and EAN-13 barcode).
Step 6: Save and test render
Section titled “Step 6: Save and test render”- Click Save template.
- Click Test render (free) — the app renders a real PDF of the template; it opens in a new tab when ready.
Test renders don’t count toward your monthly label quota.
Editing an existing template
Section titled “Editing an existing template”Open Label templates → Edit. Everything is editable; Save template applies the changes.
- Existing print jobs are not affected — each job keeps the template snapshot it was created with.
- Changing the Default template flag moves the default: only one template can be the default at a time.
Managing templates in the list
Section titled “Managing templates in the list”The Label templates page lets you:
- Search by template name, and filter by Sheet (including Custom sheet).
- Sort by Newest, Oldest, Name A–Z, or Name Z–A.
- Delete a template — confirmed with a dialog noting that existing print jobs keep their snapshot.
- Check which template is the default from the Default column badge.
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Content overflows the small cell | Use fewer slots and S/M sizes on Avery 5167; lower the barcode height |
| Barcode prints but won’t scan | Check the job’s barcode badge — a Checksum failed value is printed as SKU text; fix the variant’s barcode in Shopify |
| Long titles push lines off the label | Shorten the title, or move it to a Combined line with fewer fields |
| Wrong language on custom text | Set translations on the Translations page and pick the Label language when creating the job |
