Label Template Overview
A label template defines what prints on each label and on which paper. This page explains the building blocks — slots, sheet presets, and barcode settings — so the template editor makes sense at a glance.
Anatomy of a Template
Section titled “Anatomy of a Template”| Setting | What it controls |
|---|---|
| Template name | How the template appears in lists and job screens |
| Sheet preset | The paper geometry: page size, label grid (columns × rows), margins |
| Slots | The content lines printed on each label, top to bottom (1–8 lines) |
| Barcode format | How the barcode is encoded: auto, code128, ean13, ean8, upca, upce |
| Barcode height | Height of the barcode bars in millimeters (4–60 mm) |
| Default template | Pre-selected for new print jobs (one per shop) |
Each print job saves a snapshot of the template it was created with — editing or deleting a template later never changes jobs you already printed.
Slots: What Can Go on a Label
Section titled “Slots: What Can Go on a Label”Slots stack top to bottom. Each slot is one line; a barcode takes the full width of its line. Available fields:
| Field | Prints |
|---|---|
| Barcode | The scannable barcode symbol (full width) |
| Barcode digits | The barcode number as text, e.g. under the bars |
| SKU | The variant SKU |
| Product title | The product name |
| Variant title | The variant name, e.g. “M / Black” |
| Price | The variant price in your shop currency |
| Compare-at price | The compare-at price |
| Supplier / vendor | The product vendor |
| Custom text | Any fixed text you type (translatable — see Translations) |
| Option 1 / Option 2 | The variant’s first/second option value |
| Weight | The variant weight |
| Combined line (multiple fields) | Several fields on one line, joined by a separator (e.g. Title / $19.99 / SKU-001) |
Every text slot has a Size (S 6pt · M 8pt · L 10pt · XL 16pt · XXL 24pt), an Align (Left / Center), and a Bold toggle. The barcode’s size is controlled template-wide by Barcode height.
Choosing sizes for small labels
Section titled “Choosing sizes for small labels”- Avery 5167 cells are only 12.7 mm tall: keep it to 1–2 slots with S/M sizes, like the Warehouse SKU starter (SKU + 6 mm barcode).
- Save XL/XXL for large shipping labels where you read from a distance.
Sheet Presets
Section titled “Sheet Presets”The preset list covers the most common die-cut sheets and rolls. Dimensions follow the manufacturers’ spec sheets — margins and pitches (the center-to-center distance between labels) are exact, not approximated.
| Preset | Type | Label size | Grid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Avery 5160/8160 — Address | Sheet, US Letter | 66.7 × 25.4 mm | 3 × 10 = 30/up |
| Avery 5167/8167 — Return address | Sheet, US Letter | 44.4 × 12.7 mm | 4 × 20 = 80/up |
| Avery 18163 — Shipping | Sheet, US Letter | 66.7 × 33.9 mm | 3 × 7 = 21/up |
| Avery 5163 — Shipping | Sheet, US Letter | 101.6 × 50.8 mm | 2 × 4 = 8/up |
| Avery L7160 — Address | Sheet, A4 | 63.5 × 38.1 mm | 3 × 7 = 21/up |
| Dymo 30252 — Address roll | Roll | 89 × 28.6 mm | 1 label/page |
| Dymo 30334 — Large address | Roll | 57.2 × 31.8 mm | 1 label/page |
| Dymo 30336 — File folder | Roll | 54 × 22.2 mm | 1 label/page |
| Dymo 4XL — Shipping | Roll | 101.6 × 152.4 mm | 1 label/page |
| Zebra generic 2.25×1.25” | Roll | 57.2 × 31.8 mm | 1 label/page |
| Zebra shipping 4×6” | Roll | 101.6 × 152.4 mm | 1 label/page |
Notes:
- Letter vs A4: the A4 version of a layout has its own product code and slightly different geometry — the presets use the correct numbers for each. If your A4 sheet isn’t an L7160-compatible layout, other Avery A4 codes can often be matched by one of the presets above or by picking the closest grid.
- Rolls: each label is its own PDF page — there’s no grid, and the start-position feature doesn’t apply.
- Paper brands other than Avery usually print fine on these presets as long as the grid and label size match — check the “up” count on the packaging.
Barcode Formats
Section titled “Barcode Formats”| Format | Best for | Rules |
|---|---|---|
| auto | Recommended for most shops | Picks the right format per value (see below) |
| code128 | Internal SKUs of any kind | Letters and digits, up to 48 characters |
| ean13 | Global retail barcodes | 12–13 digits |
| ean8 | Very small retail items | 7–8 digits |
| upca | North-American retail barcodes | 11–12 digits |
| upce | Compressed UPC for small US items | 6–8 digits — only choose manually |
With auto, the app reads each variant’s barcode and picks: 12–13 digits → EAN-13 (13 starting with 0 → UPC-A), 11 digits → UPC-A, 7–8 digits → EAN-8, anything else (typical alphanumeric SKUs) → Code 128.
Checksum validation: EAN/UPC values are verified before printing. A barcode that fails its check digit is flagged in the job and printed as SKU text instead — the app never prints a code that won’t scan. Fix the value on the variant in Shopify, then refresh the job.
Starter Templates
Section titled “Starter Templates”Installed automatically the first time you open the app:
| Name | Sheet | Layout |
|---|---|---|
| Retail price | Avery 5160 | Combined title · price · SKU (S), barcode digits (S), barcode |
| Warehouse SKU | Avery 5167 | SKU (M, bold), barcode (6 mm) |
| Shipping 4×6 | Zebra 4×6” roll | Title (XL), variant (L), barcode (50 mm), SKU (L) |
You can edit them like any template.
